The Armed Conflict Event & Location Data Project (ACLED) provides an impressive range of data for reported political violence and protest events around the world. The ACLED API was leveraged to pull relevant data for reports of cartel violence in Mexico from 2019 to 2022. From this dataset one is able to extract location and time information, specifics about the actors responsible for such events, as well as free-text information providing more context about each incident.

This data was sourced from Agronometrics, a leader in the market for providing fresh produce data. By utilizing a free trial availible to students, we were able to obtain detailed information about the price of avocados per shipment when imported into the United States. This dataset then proved useful as context into the bigger picture of the avocado trade, and informed the creation of several visualizations.

This dataset, created by ESRI, provides the locations of cities within the United States with populations of approximately 10,000 or greater, all state capitals, and the national capital. A variety of metadata is offered, including population information, demographics, average household size, and countless other variables.

This dataset was scraped from the Mexican government’s own Servicio de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP), which roughly translates to The Agriculture and Fisheries Information Service. This organization is in charge of designing and coordinating the operations of the Mexican government in regards to agriculture and fisheries, and also plays a large role in promoting sustainable rural development across the country. From this organization we were able to obtain information about the overall avocado production (in metric tons) of each of Mexico’s 32 states, over multiple years.

This version was updated to include all data through 2020, and was used for initial prototyping.
